A day after Amit Shah asking both the chief ministers to tread the Constitutional path to solve the Karnataka-Maharashtra border issue, a government convoy en route Belagavi was attacked by people who allegedly spoke Marathi.
The vehicle, belonging to the Karnataka State Cooperative Agriculture and Rural Development Bank Limited, was attacked while on its way to Belagavi’s Suvarna Vidhana Soudha from Bengaluru.
The driver said that the miscreants asked him to slow down and pelted stones at the vehicle and alleged that they all spoke Marathi.
The inter-state border dispute is a long-standing issue between Maharashtra and Karnataka, who are staking claim to Marathi and Kannada-speaking villages on either side of their boundaries.
Since 1 May 1960, Maharashtra has been claiming 865 villages, including Belagavi, Karwar and Nippani, to be merged into Maharashtra. Karnataka however has been refusing to part with these areas.
Yesterday, Shah had held a meeting in Delhi with Karnataka and Maharashtra chief ministers – Basavaraj Bommai and Eknath Shinde, asking them to stay away from staking the claim until the Supreme Court gives its verdict.
He also announced setting up of a committee under a retired IPS officer to address issues pertaining to the inter-state row.
