Karnataka: The jungles on the borders of Belgaum and Goa have good number of animals. In Some regions night traffic has been banned due to movement of animals in the forest.
Road kills have taken a heavy toll on animals in the past. Many animals such as bisons, bears and leopards have fallen prey to trains which pass through the jungles of Belgaum and Goa.
One 4 year old female leopard was found dead on the railway tracks. The leopard was run over by the train. The female leopard was pregnant and was carrying two cubs.
The death of the leopard has brought grief to the region and conservationist’s who are now demanding concrete steps to avoid such incidents in future.
The forest department reached the spot and performed the last rites of the leopard after the post mortem.
Mollem deputy conservator of forests A Jabestian said the wild animal could have met with the accident while crossing the track. The leopard was found lying dead in the middle of the tracks.
The incident took place near kulem at Pokarmol-Kalem in Dharbandora taluka. on the borders of Karnataka and Goa. Similar incident took place last week where another leopard was run over by a train.
Concrete measures need to be taken to ensure so that the beautiful animals thrive in the region.
